A Late Afternoon at Mt. Baldy

A Late Afternoon in Mt. Baldy #wanderlust #travel #california #mtbaldy

The beauty of living in Southern California is experiencing all of the exhilarating local escapes.  You can literally decide the day of, to pack a bag road trip it to encounter crisp blue waves crashing ashore, a gorgeous desert, or even the snow; and all within 2 to 3 hours or less. I have made it my personal goal to explore more of California this year.  There is still so much I have not seen, and I am a freaking native!

So last week, the beau and I decided to explore Mt. Baldy. Mt. Baldy is the highest point of the massive San Gabriel Mountain Range, and is just an hour outside of Los Angeles.  Prior to committing to a full ski or snowboard day, we decided to first check it out and get into some tobogganing.  Unfortunately, Patty Mayonnaise was not feeling well, and we did not make it out to Mt. Baldy until late Saturday afternoon.  But though we only had a few hours, we did have an absolute blast.  Here is why we would visit again:

  • It’s only an hour away.
  • It’s peaceful.
  • It’s beautiful.
  • It’s not as hectic as Big Bear.
  • Super affordable for a quick getaway.  Check out Groupon before buying directly from Mt Baldy Ski Lifts. However,  lift tickets start at $15.99 or $39.99 for a lift ticket plus ski or snowboard rental. What!? Crazy, right?
  • You can hike, just hang out and drink hot chocolate, tube with the kids, snowboard or ski, all at the drop of a hat.

Here is what we plan to do on our next Mt. Baldy adventure:

    • Book a cabin (more than a week advance).  We really wanted to stay overnight, but these puppies fill up quickly, especially during holiday weekends.
    • Come early!  The lifts are ancient and slow.  Come and go early, otherwise you will be waiting an hour plus to get back to your car.
    • Let’s shred the gnar, baby!  Haha, I just learned that phrase today. With shorter drops, the tubing is not as impressive as it is in Big Bear.  It is great for the kids, but adults will get bored. Opt for a snow hike or hit the slopes.

  • Pack lunches and snacks.  As you probably suspected, the food prices are exorbitant, so bring your own.  Besides, I like to be in control of what I am eating when I’m on the road.

All in all I cannot wait to go back!  I hadn’t been to the snow since I was a wee girl, and I look forward to more local snow trips.

Have you been to Mt. Baldy before? What did you think, what are your tips?  Share with me in the comments.  🙂

Ok, if you are exploring so cal try some of the high desert areas. In spring they sometimes have ranger led interpretive programs to learn about desert plant life and you can watch the websites to find our when the wild flowers will bloom. Some places we like to go, even this time if year is nice and cool is the Mojave national preserve, Death Valley, rainbow preserve, Joshua tree, and Anza borrega.
